If materials are scarse then it makes sense to reuse what you have and this was the case with old and broken weapons etc being re utilised for new purposes. Much of todays waste recycling comes from the by-products of modern industry and household living such as glass bottles, plastics, textiles and timber. It is becoming more and more common place as land fill sites are becoming full and there is a greater concern of the negative impact many of these materials have on the environment. Many new products bare waste recycling in mind and create products that are designed to be reused or broken down in a way that is less harmful to the environment.
